Plantation houses & Slave Pens | Grenada's history

Besides enjoying sun, fun and adventures, you should not miss to discover the history of Grenada. The colonial history of Grenada is characterized by permanently changing ownership between the english and the french and the agricultural exploitation by plantations and slavery. For a little more detail about the plantations, I recommend the article Grenada Heritage: Our plantations from the National Archives Of Grenada. We have visited four plantation houses in the parish of St. Patrick and their slave pens.

Grenada Hiking: Mt. William - Duquesne Beach - Darvi Beach

A spontaneous hike yesterday to discover the route from Duquesne Beach to 'Darvi' Beach. I was really surprised how nice the route from Mt. William down to the sea at Duquesne Beach and further on to Darvi Beach is. The way back along the street was the more challenging part, because the road is partly very steep. As a plus, this road is very quiet, you will hardly see any cars passing. I can really recommend this route, the only downside is that many people have dogs running around to protect their property. I was sometimes surrounded by severall barking dogs, but none of them tried to attack me. The best time to hike this route is in the late afternoon. You will see the sunset over the caribbean sea and the route along the street is a bit cooler.

The history of Fort George, St. George's, Grenada

Towering 175 ft above the St. George's harbour, Fort George is not only the oldest but undoubtedly the most significant fort on the island, having always stood at a focal point as major changes occured in political and military landscape of Grenada. Dating back to the 1600's, while Grenada was still a French colony, Fort George was originally known as Fort Royal. Designed by Francois Blondel in 1666 and built the year after, Fort Royal served as a battery with commanding views over the Carenage, then the central port of entry and La Ville du Fort Royal (now St. George's), the hub of economical, political and social activities on the island. Between 1701 and 1713 Fort Royal was upgraded as part of the plan of making Grenada a trading post for the Asiento, an agreement forged between Spain and Great Britain in 1713 that governed the supply of African slaves to the spanish colonies in the Americas.
