Plantation houses & Slave Pens | Grenada's history

Besides enjoying sun, fun and adventures, you should not miss to discover the history of Grenada. The colonial history of Grenada is characterized by permanently changing ownership between the english and the french and the agricultural exploitation by plantations and slavery. For a little more detail about the plantations, I recommend the article Grenada Heritage: Our plantations from the National Archives Of Grenada. We have visited four plantation houses in the parish of St. Patrick and their slave pens.

Cocoa Processing in Grenada

The cocoa season is here again in the beautiful Spice Isle of Grenada. With the processing stations of the Grenada Cocoa Association bursting at the seams we once again decided to process our beans ourselves. We want to share s ome of the knowledge and experiences gathered about cocoa processing with you. 1. Picking Picking the ripe cocoa pods with a cocoa knife First up the ripe cocoa pods have to be picked. We usually use cocoa knives in Grenada, which is really a sharpened blade with a curved hook. The aim is to either pull at or slice through the stem at the base of the pod, being careful not to damage the branches or the trunk of the trees where the pods are attached. Some pods can be really subborn and it might require some technique to pick them but don't get too impatient - they all come down! The history of Fort George, St. George's, Grenada

Towering 175 ft above the St. George's harbour, Fort George is not only the oldest but undoubtedly the most significant fort on the island, having always stood at a focal point as major changes occured in political and military landscape of Grenada. Dating back to the 1600's, while Grenada was still a French colony, Fort George was originally known as Fort Royal. Designed by Francois Blondel in 1666 and built the year after, Fort Royal served as a battery with commanding views over the Carenage, then the central port of entry and La Ville du Fort Royal (now St. George's), the hub of economical, political and social activities on the island. Between 1701 and 1713 Fort Royal was upgraded as part of the plan of making Grenada a trading post for the Asiento, an agreement forged between Spain and Great Britain in 1713 that governed the supply of African slaves to the spanish colonies in the Americas.
